Varicose Veins in Spring: When Is It Time to Seek a Vascular Assessment?

As spring approaches, many people become more aware of their legs. Lighter clothing, warmer temperatures and increased outdoor activity can make symptoms that were previously easy to ignore more noticeable.

For some, this includes visible veins. For others, it is a persistent heaviness, swelling, or aching that tends to worsen at the end of the day.

Varicose veins are common. However, they are not always simply cosmetic.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when valves within the leg veins do not function effectively. Instead of blood flowing efficiently back towards the heart, it pools within the vein. Over time, this can cause the vein to enlarge, twist and become visible beneath the skin.

This underlying issue is known as venous insufficiency.

While some individuals experience no discomfort, others may notice:

• Aching or throbbing in the legs
• Heaviness or fatigue, particularly after standing
• Swelling around the ankles
• Itching or skin irritation
• Skin discolouration around the lower leg
• Visible, bulging veins

In more advanced cases, untreated venous disease may lead to skin changes or ulceration.

Why Spring Is an Ideal Time to Address Them

There are three practical reasons why early spring is often the ideal time for assessment:

  1. Symptoms often become more noticeable as temperatures rise.

  2. If treatment is recommended, there is time for recovery before peak summer months.

  3. Early intervention can help prevent progression of venous disease.

Addressing venous concerns proactively allows for thoughtful planning rather than reactive treatment.

When Should You Consider Booking?

You may wish to consider a vascular review if:

• Leg discomfort affects your daily activity
• Swelling persists regularly
• You notice progressive skin changes
• Visible veins are increasing over time
• There is a family history of venous disease

Even if treatment is not immediately required, understanding the condition of your veins provides reassurance and clarity.
